Trío Nicrom

The electro-acoustic music improvisation trio Nicrom emerged in mid-2000 as a response to the concern to create a space for collective creation where music and painting had equal value. In this way, the trio's proposal is that the visual aspect is a fundamental factor for the auditory part and in the same way it seeks to consider the sound material as a necessary part for visual work. The trio have a special interest in exploring and exploiting the possibilities and resources of new electronic technologies, either by processing acoustic instruments in real time as well as by means of synthesizers and computers. The intention of the trio is to find alternate mechanisms to produce coherent musical discourses based more on timbral and graphic manipulation than on the intervalic relationships of sounds, which has led the trio to work and explore the spectrum of noise and abstract painting.

The Nicrom trio's presentations are entirely improvised music during the performances in which the graphic material that the visual artist is creating throughout the concert is projected on stage. The musical form, the timbral and graphic material as well as the hierarchical relationships between the different members of the trio are constantly being defined and modified during the performances. The freedom offered by this technique of collective creation, which at first might seem like a process without control and without direction, on the contrary forces all members of the ensemble to pay close attention not only to their own material but also to the material and proposals that the rest of the members propose throughout the concert.

From January to May 2001, the Nicrom trio held a concert season that allowed them to explore and experiment with different musical proposals, various technological resources and, above all, with different creative processes. Each concert was different and in each one of them results were obtained that allowed to improve and mature the musical proposal. In some of the presentations there was the participation of invited musicians who promoted the renewal of musical ideas and sounds.

This sample includes a CD with a sound sample made up of small fragments from the last 10 concerts. Some photographs of the presentations and the graphic work are also included. We hope they serve to give a general idea of our proposal.
